Teacher Man
decided to set aside the glass bead game for a little while in favor of teacher man. I'm quite enjoying it - Frank Mccourt has such a wonderful sense of humor. the "an excuse letter from Eve in the garden of Eden" bit would have absolutely been a hit with me if I'd had a similar assignment. it's a book that's both really funny, thoughtful, and heartfelt without feeling saccharine.
I think Mccourt has it right, though. speaking as someone who only graduated high school a few years ago, teenagers can be assholes and trying to reach out to them as a teacher is tough work. it's really amazing how vulnerable he is in admitting, "yeah, I was sort of a pathetic newbie who initially had trouble letting my students get away with a lot of stuff because they'd ask me about life back in Ireland and I'd answer?" the sort of transparency with that combined with his humor is so refreshing to read.
it's not a very long book, so I'll likely be able to finish very soon! maybe within the next day or two...
The Glass Bead Game Progress
to be honest, I'm not quite feeling the glass bead game yet. don't get me wrong, I'm enjoying it on some level - I'm really fond of the way that Knecht's story is told through the lens of academic scholars as opposed to a conventional narrative. it's a really cool, underutilized technique of storytelling (borges' library of babel, anyone?)
...the problem is I feel like it's sort of slow-placed. which, honestly, is the same problem I had with steppenwolf. but I found myself enjoying steppenwolf so much that it didn't really bother me by the end.
maybe if I give myself some time, I'll enjoy it more. I try to avoid dropping books unless they're so abysmal that I can't take it anymore.
Welcome!
so, you've stumbled across my little corner of the internet - nice to meet you! I find that the cons of social vastly outweigh the pros, so I decided to create my own website. once I start to figure out the ropes of CSS and HTML, I'll see about posting a guestbook or comments function...
you can find my thoughts on a lot of topics in my videos. this, however, is for less refined rambling.
things you'll find here:
- baking
- books
- movies
- dog trivia
- whatever else I feel like talking about
hope you enjoy your stay.
